SC Academy of Sciences Governor’s Awards
A professor of biological sciences at the University of South Carolina since 2002, Dr. Timothy Mousseau has held a number of additional academic positions over the course of his career, including visiting professor with Chubu University and Universite de Pierre et Marie Curie. Dr. Timothy Mousseau has garnered various accolades as a scientist, including the 2019 South Carolina Governor’s Award for Excellence in Scientific Awareness.
The Drug Science Foundation established the Governor’s Award in 1985 and has overseen the award program alongside the South Carolina Academy of Sciences since 1989. The award was developed with a dual goal of not only recognizing individuals and groups who have made meritorious strides in a scientific field, but also demonstrating the diversity and quality of scientific activities taking place in South Carolina.
In 2010, the Governor’s Award was expanded to include four unique categories. The Excellence in Scientific Awareness (ESA) honor, for example, emphasizes the impact an individual has had on science education in the state. The award recognizes both formal educators in academic settings and scientists involved in less formal education, such as discussing scientific matters in the media.
The Excellence in Scientific Research (ESR) honor, meanwhile, focuses on successful, comprehensive research initiatives. The award does not have a limited scope, and in fact prioritizes research that makes a national, if not international, impact.
Additional award categories include the Excellence in Scientific Research at a Predominantly Undergraduate Institution and the Young Scientist Award for Excellence in Scientific Research.
